WPISD has launching a new communication tool called “Peachjar” on Tuesday, September 12th. School-approved flyers will now be sent to you electronically and posted on the school website. Simply click flyers you receive via email or click the Peachjar button on our homepage.
This “green” initiative will save our school tons of paper and reduce copy costs by thousands of dollars. On top of that, posting school flyers in this electronic backpack removes a significant administrative burden from teachers, office staff, and volunteers.

Principal- Melanie Mullin
Welcome to Woods! I am Melanie Mullin, principal at the intermediate campus. As a graduate of WPISD, I am honored to be serving our community in this leadership role. I received an excellent educational foundation at WPISD, and I am excited to share that pride with several of my former teachers and classmates who are currently at Woods. We look forward to continuing Woods’ tradition of high expectations and success. Our goal is to give every student who walks through our doors a safe, loving, and academically superior environment. We want our students to look forward to new adventures in learning every day.
Since this will be my first year at Woods, I would like to give you some background information. I received my Bachelor’s in English from Texas A&M-Commerce. I taught secondary English Language Arts for five years before pursuing my administrative degree. While working on my Master’s in Educational Leadership, I continued my work in the classroom and also served as an administrative intern. I was an assistant principal for two years before accepting the position as principal in my hometown. I cannot tell you how excited I am to be back home. GO TIGERS!
My family consists of my husband Doug, also a WPISD alumni; our son, Seth, who plays football and runs track as a senior at WPHS; our daughter, Abagail, who is a junior at WPHS and plays volleyball; and our daughter, Adasyn, who is in the third grade at Woods. Our family stays busy with camping, sports, and many other family activities.
I hope you, as family and community members, will join the staff of Woods and I in making this the best year ever for everyone at Woods. We encourage you to become active participants in the education of our future leaders. Please feel free to come by for a visit, as a volunteer, or just to ask what you can do to help our students be successful. I look forward to meeting you and working with you, whether you are a parent/guardian or a community member.
Wishing everyone a year of growth.

What is Dysgraphia???
Are There Advantages in Being Dyslexic?
Absolutely! Even though students with dyslexia will struggle with decoding words there are other areas where they will excel. It is important that our students understand that even though reading and/or writing might be hard for them that this is in no way a reflection of their intellectual abilities. Here are some specific areas that research shows are areas of strengths for dyslexic learners.
- Great at visual thinking- thinking in pictures.
- Fast problem solvers, able to think laterally.
- Excellent trouble-shooters.
- They are intuitive- good at reading people.
- Verbally articulate- great communicators.
- Creative- so many dyslexics are employed as designers, artists, actors, chefs.
- Spatially talented many dyslexics are employed as engineers, architects, designers, artists, mathematicians, physicists, physicians (esp. Surgeons and orthopaedists), and dentists.
- Dyslexic people frequently enjoy above average physical co-ordination skills.
Here is a small list of famous people that are dyslexic.
- Henry Winkler, Actor
- Steven Spielberg, Director
- Mohammed Ali, World Heavyweight Campion Boxer
- Anne Bancroft, Actress
- Duncan Goodhew, Arctic Explorer
- Magic Johnson, Basketball Hall of Famer
- Bob May, Golfer
- Diamond Dallas Page, World Wrestling Champion
- Steve Redrave, Olympic Gold Medalist (rowing)
- Nolan Ryan, Pitcher for the Texas Rangers
- Tim Tebow-athlete
- Tom Cruise-Actor
- Whoopi Goldberg-Comedian/Actress

What do I do if I suspect my child is dyslexic?
Meet with your child's teacher and discuss your concerns. After that if there is still a concern about dyslexia your child's teacher will get in contact with the campus counselor so that all needed data is gathered to determine if there is a need to formally test for dyslexia. Here is a web site that has some good information to help you decide if your child needs dyslexia testing or not.
Here is a wonderful web site that has a lot of great information for parents and teachers. There are simulation videos you can watch that will help you understand the struggles your child is going through.
The one consistent thing about students with dyslexia is that there is no consistency. No two dyslexic learners will be the same and some days may be harder than other days. Here is a web site that has a list of 37 common traits of dyslexia. Most people with dyslexia will exhibit 10 or more of these traits.
If I can be of any help to you please feel free to contact me. Thank you!
